De Miniatuurmeesteres (Engelse titel: The Miniature Mistress) verhaalt over de vijftienjarige Soraya, een meisje met bijzonder schildertalent. Ze leeft in zestiende-eeuws Perzië, waar vrouwen nog steeds als ondergeschikt aan mannen worden gezien. Nadat haar vader sterft en ze uitgehuwelijkt wordt aan een oude man vlucht ze naar een gastgezin. Haar gastvader besluit een aantal van haar schilderijen op te hangen in zijn stoffenwinkel, waar ze bij elke klant goed in de smaak vallen. Ze vallen zelfs zo goed in de smaak dat de sjah van Perzië de maker van de meesterwerken als hofschilder wil zonder te weten dat dit een vrouw is. Verkleed als man maakt Soraya de reis naar zijn paleis, waar haar een leven vol avontuur te wachten staat…

The Miniature Mistress narrates the life of Soraya, a fifteen-year-old girl with a special talent for painting. She lives in sixteenth-century Persia, a country where women are still considered inferior to men. After her father dies and she is married off to a senior she flees into the arms of a host family. Her host father decides to put up some of her paintings in his fabric shop, where they attract much attention. They attract so much attention, even, that the shah of Persia wants the artist behind the masterpieces to be the court painter, not knowing this is a woman. Dressed in men’s attire Soraya travels to his palace, where a life full of adventure awaits her…
